Xiao LI received his B.ENG degree in Electrical Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2012. After that, he came to Texas A&M University to pursue his Ph.D. degree. His research focuses on power engineering. He got some awards in electricity design competitions and owns a patent in China. He once undertook an IEEE education standard granted project as the team leader. He has published more than 7 academic papers by now including conference proceedings and journal papers.

Q : Talk about your three-year study experience in Texas A&M University, what differences did you see in cultural diversity and teaching methods.

A : As far as I am concerned, there are cultural differences in my daily life that is also a consensus reached among our international students in USA. First of all, because of the language barrier, many Chinese students kept silent in the classroom, sparingly interacted with foreigners and ostracized themselves from American people, which influenced their learning and living to a great extent. Sometimes, you will find it is difficult to play a joke with American students. It often happened that I truly laughed a lot while my American partner didn’t know what made me laugh. I think this is the distinct manifestation of the cultural differences. Besides, the language barrier will also make many students can’t follow the professors in class, particularly some non-American lecturers with different accents. That is one very big challenge for some students who had poor English. Hence, I suggest all of you who want to study in the United States watch more US TV series to know more about American culture and their lifestyles so as to integrate into American everyday life as quickly as possible in future.

Q : Briefly introduce your internship in Arbin Instrument Company (America)

A : There is a long three-month summer vacation in universities in USA. Thus students here always look for internships even though there are very few opportunities. Rather than making money, students could accumulate rich practical experience form their summer internships. Arbin Instrument Company (America) where I served as an intern is a leading company that is mainly engaged in the battery test and the development of charging and discharging equipment. In the process of product design, electronic technology is of great significance. During the internship period, I was mainly responsible for assisting the experienced engineers in product design and product testing, including put forward system structure and specific circuit design scheme according to the product specific applications, and conduct the actual circuit simulation to prove the feasibility. The internship experience not only deepened my understanding of some theoretical concepts and research techniques learned in class but also made me know more clearly about a complete system of product design. Tell the truth, the competition is extremely fierce when applying for an internship. As the proverb goes, chance favors the prepared minds. Thus you should be well-prepared and apply for an internship early. Whatever your major might be, you should improve your professional skills and enhance the overall capabilities of practice, so that you can get an internship finally.
