Q : What do you learn from the experience of working as the research assistant in UPenn?

A : I worked as a research assistant in the precise lab, mlab and xlab in the department of computer and information science in University of Pennsylvania. During the work in Precise, I worked as a software developer to build a software-based decision support system that automates a paper based clinical protocol funded by NIH. During this experience, I worked with the nurses in the Penn Nursing school visited the ICUs and learned what the software like in ICUs in America. After that I worked on an iOS App in mLab and xLab. My main responsibility is to build iOS apps to interact with a vision interactive operating system that allow users to choose ads of the objectives that appear in TV shows. I suggested that you go and work as a research assistant if it’s possible. As when working in the lab, you can get access to some advanced ideas from the professors or the PHDs in the lab. As one of the PHDs in my lab just open a startup to work on a solution to the Doctors by using the leap motion. It’s very creative and advanced. Also you have some projects to be added to the resume. During my work in the lab, I gained some experience in coding, practiced my oral English with the clinicians at software design stages and learned to transfer user requirements to software engineering requirements.

Q : Would you please share with us the working experience in OSIsoft?

A : I worked in OSIsoft for almost 6 months. It’s a very nice place to work. We have a good salary, 22 days of paid vocation and a very good work-life balance. Everyday I went to work at 9, and we had a daily meeting to discuss what we have done for the last day. My main responsibility is to build office apps on office 365 of Microsoft. Our app works on Word, Excel, Outlook and some other office products to visualize data for BI purpose. People here are very nice and helpful. If you have any questions, you can go and ask them for help. The company will also assign a mentor for you to give you some suggestion on life and work. You can also consult the mentor for some advice for the work. And during lunch time I’ll eat with my teammates to talk about some problems of the code. It’s very useful as we can learn a lot from the seniors as they have more experience than us.
