  有问必答

Q : What do you think is the most important while applying for a postgraduate program in Architecture?

A : Researching the program that suits your design interest and having an outstanding portfolio. Architecture program in different schools have different focuses. Some schools are famous for free form digital design while some other schools take more from the heritage of modernism. Some schools emphasize on making large scale physical models and some other schools give importance to theory and architectural representation. No matter which type of design school you would like to go, your portfolio is the most important application material. Your portfolio is your opportunity to demonstrate your project conceptualization ability, design skills, and visual communications skills.

Q : For our mainland students who plan to stay and work in the USA, do you have any advice on how to strengthen their competitiveness during the postgraduate program?

A : Students should give proper attention to all of their classes, especially design studios. Great studio work adds excellent material to your portfolio for future job applications, and helps you build a professional relationship with your professors and fellow students. In addition to doing a good job at school work, international students should try to use the university resource as much as they can to seek social and career opportunities, either by joining student groups, getting part-time job on campus, or connecting to alumni through events and online networking. It might be hard to do all of this in addition to academic work, but school breaks are great times to catch up. Finally, you should always try to find an architecture internship during the school year or during summer breaks.

Q : How can you help our students who are about to apply for a postgraduate program in Architecture?

A : First, I would like to talk with students, and help them find the programs that match their design interests the most. Then I can take an in-depth look at the student's application essays and portfolios, give detailed advice on the writing, and personalized advice on portfolio design. I would like to share my own portfolio and portfolios online as examples of how a portfolio can reflect who you are as a designer. I would like to review iterations of portfolio design and proofread portfolio project statement and narratives to ensure good portfolio design. Some architecture students work in other design fields after graduation, so I also would like to discuss alternative career paths and the possibility of seeking a different design degree such as architecture technology, urban design, industrial design, interaction design, user experience design, and other allied professions.
