Hongyan Zheng has received her B.S. degree in Hospitality, Tourism and Business English that is one of the top and the most popular majors in Beijing International Studies University in Beijing, China. Now she is achieving her master degree in Public Relations and Corporate Communication in New York University starting from Sep 2015. Hongyan is now studying knowledge in different fields, such as the public relations, brand management, marketing, and social media management in graduate school. With the help from the professional and experienced professors, she gains a lot of useful and professional PR skills. And, with the advantages of the location of NYU, she also worked in different PR agencies to practice her knowledge and developed her career.

Q : Could you give some advice on applying for a postgraduate program in Public Relations and Corporate Communication with an English background?

A : With 4 years or more English educated background to apply for a postgraduate program in Public Relations and Corporate Communication is a huge advantage. Public Relations and Corporate Communication is a professional that has a high requirement of speaking, listening and writing, especially the writing skill, which you would use every day in PR field. If you have English educated background, you won’t be afraid of writing in English, because this is the basic skill you use in daily life. PR can be very stressful and fancy at the same time. My advice would be keeping the good attitude to anything you learn in this field. As an English background applicant, use your advantages and be confident. Keep and prepare to learn new things and practice your writing skill.

Q : How can you help our students in the application of a postgraduate program in Public Relations and Corporate Communication?

A : I would like to help applicants to have updated information about PR industry in this changeable society. Currently, as a graduate student in Public Relations and Corporate Communication at New York University, my professors all come from PR and Advertising industries. They have professional experience and I can gain a lot of useful information about PR. Therefore, if you have any questions about this field, I would love to help you and apply your dream school. Of course, writing and speaking skills are paramount in PR industry. I would like to help you improve these skills and get a higher level in the personal statement, interview and writing the sample. Also, I have work experiences in the Hospitality industry, PR agencies, and Publishing companies. The previous work experience, which I achieved and learned, can help you solve your questions about the career choice. New York City is a very different metropolitan in the world. If you are interested in knowing more about the life in New York, I am sure that we will have lots of fun topics.

Q : Do you have any suggestion on how to enhance competitiveness during the undergraduate program so that our students can stand out from so many applicants?

A : The best way to be a competitive applicant would be to get good GPA as possible as you can. GPA is a very important element when to apply for top schools. What’s more, if you have a plan to study overseas, please be careful about your academic schedule and prepare to study GRE or GMAT. Last but not the least, the excellent personal statement and writing sample are the main roles when you establish yourself to interviewers of school.
