Winson Yan has received his B.S. degree with Outstanding Graduate Honor in Thermal Energy and Power Engineering from Beihang University in 2013. Then he finished his Master degree in Aerospace Engineering from the same university in 2016 and was endowed with National Scholarship. Winson is a member of ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers). His research interests include various topics in Mechanical Engineering. He once worked at MTU. Currently, Winson is a Ph.D. student in UCLA.

Q : Briefly talk about your application experience in the past year.

A : I prepared early. I made a thoughtful schedule for my application once I started my graduate study. The application is far more than the competitiveness of your background, such as GPA, TOEFL and GRE. Actually it will help you a lot if you know what your dream program mostly cares about or whether targeted professor has a recruiting plan. Inspired by my friend, I tried to obtain every single piece of resource about my dream school and eventually achieve a competitive package out of my peers.

Q : What do you think is the most important thing when applying a postgraduate program in mechanical engineering?

A : For a postgraduate application, the academic communication is the most valuable strength, which is the best way to approve your potential academically. The academic communication includes recommendation and academic connection. Briefly, you can profit significantly from a powerful recommendation letter or high academic achievements coherent with your goal.

Q : Why do you want to be a mentor with Compassedu?

A : What makes an applicant distinctive from thousands of your peers is how well you know about the application. Fortunately, I, a totally layman, met my mentor before my application. He indicated the importance of each part of my background and helped me to schedule my specific application timeline. In return, I want to share my experience and resource with all young fellows through this great platform, Compassedu.
