What’s it like to work in the Bay
Area, just one word, fantastic.
After the graduation from Penn, I
came to the Bay Area. That was in July, and the weather is super hot in Philly,
however the weather here is super cool. In the following days, I settle down to
rent the apartment and buy the car. Then I begin to work.
Usually I got up at 8:30 in the
morning, and then drove to work. After doing some coding we’ll have a daily
meeting to talk about what we have done from yesterday. Also we would bring up
some problems of the product and everybody would think up some ideas to solve
the problem. We usually have one hour lunch time and play some games after the
lunch, such as foosball or snooker. And the afternoon we could have some rest
and start coding again. Usually we could go back home at 5 or earlier.
During the weekend, we usually go
hiking in the mountains, or go skiing in the Tahoe Lake and have a spa in the spring
inside the mountain after the skiing. Sometimes we will also go to SF to have
some crabs in fisherman wharf. After enjoying the whole weekend, we go to work
again. Besides the beautiful scene in California, the food here is also very
good. As there’re a lot of Chinese people here, there’re a lot of Chinese
restaurants in different plaza, and the taste is super good.
A lot of graduate students have the
problem of whether to stay in the US to work or go back to China. My suggestion
is that to work in the US if it’s possible. If you want to go back, you can go
with 2-3 years of work experience. When work here, I get to know about what the
industry product would be like. It’s not the projects that we do in the school,
it’s a whole cycle system, including design, development, test, build, and maintenance.
Also it’s a good opportunity to practice oral English and get into the American
cultures. Also by working in the software companies, we can learn a lot from
the senior software engineers, and sometimes it would be efficient for us to
get the latest knowledge.
Another advantage to work in Bay
Area is that this is the incubation station for the start ups. As Stanford is
here, a lot of people have the dream to open their own companies. If you have
the dream to open your own company to realize your ideas, this is the place for
you. You can get in touch with the friends with the same idea and get access to
a lot of fundings.
