Caoyuan Ma graduated from Sun Yat-Sen University with GPA ranking NO.1 in Yat-Sen Academic Accelerated program, receiving his B.Sc Degree in Chemistry in 2013. Then he comes to Brown University to pursue his PhD degree and meanwhile works as the teaching assistant and research assistant in Department of Chemistry.

Q : What do you think is the most important thing when applying programs in chemistry and chemical engineering?

A : Chemistry is a practice-emphasized curriculum. Undoubtedly, the observational ability, thinking ability, experimental ability and innovation capability of students are all irreplaceable. Thus, I think that more time spent in the lab was critical. Applicants should try their best to accumulate more practical experiences. Meanwhile, chemistry is a rigorous discipline. Its logic and rigidity require a student’s rigorous style of doing scientific research which is the basis of the chemical research. Last but not least, a great ability of English reading and comprehension is an equally important factor in application as well as in future study.

Q : Why do you want to be a mentor with Compass Edu?

A : Previously, when I was applying for the PhD program, I thought studying in the Ivy League school is an unreachable dream. However, until now I am really here through protracted and unremitting efforts, I believe that as long as you put your heart into your application and carried out the proper application strategies, I have the confidence that you can achieve your renowned school dream as well.
