Q : As an undergraduate major in English, if I have no concrete interesting research direction, could you recommend me some related major to apply for?

A : English specialty always focuses on the language itself and British &American cultures; hence I suggest you can focus your application on linguistics, English literature and Language teaching, even teaching Chinese as a foreign language is also a good choice.

Q : How are the employment prospects of ESL (TESOL)?

A : As far as I am concerned, in USA, due to a scarcity of skilled candidates, there are a great amount of empty positions in elementary and secondary school education field, especially the foreign language teaching. As a nation of immigrants, the United States welcomes people from every country and culture. As an ESL teacher, a solid foundation of English forms the prerequisite for one to get a job teaching English in a society obsessed with learning the language from native speakers. If you aim to return home, it will be easier to work in a field that is related to the subject we learned at college. With the development of the ESL market in China, parents in the big cities are starting to spend a lot more on English education and China is the big new market for TEFL teachers. TESOL personnel will also be greatly increased demand. Job prospects in this field look promising, although there is considerable competition.

Q : Why you choose to combine the Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and ESL courses? And how to achieve this?

A : I suggest you could apply for one of them. In the learning process, you could take the initiative to study the other major and participate in related practice and internship. In this way, you can develop yourself into inter-disciplinary talent and find satisfying job in USA. Although, Chinese weren't as competitive in the English training industry, yet there are a lot of vacancies in foreign Chinese teaching where we have a good advantage over others. Thus we should develop our teaching methods and skills through professional training in order to stand out from the competition.
