  有问必答

Q : As I know, instead of studying for a doctor’s degree directly after you graduated with a master degree in China, you chose to gain another Master’s degree at the University of Alabama in Huntsville firstly, and then you transfer to pursue your PhD degree at University of Texas at Austin. This way is much appreciated by many Chinese students because it can tactfully avoid the effects of undergraduate grades which are not good enough. Would you talk about the differences between this zigzaggery for a doctor’s degree and applying for a master’s degree directly? And what should students do to prepare for further applications for PhD programme in the period of master’s degree study?

A : In my opinion, actually there is a huge difference between the two, because the ultimate aim of this zigzaggery is to transfer to a better university to pursue a PhD. Hence, I suggest that when applying for the early master’s degree, students should pay more attention to your choice of professionals and achieve good results in specialized courses which will have great influence on the following applications. Moreover, there are a lot of wonderful professors in less well-known universities. If you could earn an opportunity to do researches with them and publish some academic papers under their guidance, you will succeed easily in your later applications. On the other hand, the normal application for an only master’s degree in the United States should focus more on your career plans. If you aim to stay in the United States and work here, I suggest while your applications, you should consider more about the reputation of the university. A famous university will provide you a best-connected interpersonal relationship and network which will play a helpful role in assisting you search for jobs. You'll stand a better chance getting a job offer if you have alumni or friends in the company who can recommend you. As mentioned above, if your ultimate goal is a PhD degree, you should strive for more opportunities to participate in more research projects, attend more academic communication meetings and publish more academic papers so that you can get in touch with professors from other universities, who maybe become your future supervisor. Meanwhile, you should try your best to get an excellent GPA in the United States which will make up for a lackluster undergraduate grade. Of course, most important of all is to do a good job in researches.

Q : Briefly talk about what you can do to help our students who are about to apply for studying abroad.

A : My main competitive advantages are my rich experience in this kind of applications, and my unique experience of transferring to another university. Hence, I would give much help for those students like me whose undergraduate background is not excellent enough and lead them into their dream schools. Besides, I have a strong understanding of universities all over the USA (not limited to Top 100) and master their respective characteristics. Furthermore, I lived in America for a relatively long time and studied in two different universities. I know exactly all sorts of chances available here. I believe my extensive experience could bring convenience and great help to the blossoming undergraduates.
