Alexandra Shen received her bachelor degree in Communication from Fudan Journalism School in 2013. And then she got her Master’s degree in USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism with major in Digital Social Media. After graduation, she moves to Dallas and works as a social media and digital content manager in HYLA Mobile. She mainly takes charge of Coordinating implementation of HYLA‘s social media strategy. During the graduate and undergraduate, besides studying in the classroom, she participated in lots of internships and social practices such as serving as a summer intern in Mobile Internet Group in Tencent and works as a PR intern in SMG.

Q : In your opinion, what should be the most important capability in Media Industry?

A : The first and foremost one is excellent verbal & written communication skill. That's why USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism asks for quite high TOEFL scores. Persuasiveness, good language proficiency and good personal communication skills also will do you a favor while looking for a job in media industry. Let me put it this way. All you need to do now is to lay a solid foundation in English, acquire a large range of knowledge, and grasp every chance to train your abilities. Moreover, a passion for the internet and active social accounts and a thorough knowledge of audience usage trends are required.

Q : My major of undergraduate isn’t Mass Communication related. However I intend to change my major to mass communication in the period of graduate study. I want to know how to equip me with a competitive advantage in applications.

A : As a matter of fact, lots of my classmates in USC learned other specializations in undergraduate course period, such as English, Chinese Language and Literature, marketing etc. Their multi-disciplinary backgrounds make them become integrated talents. It is already your competitive advantage. Besides, to gain more favorable points, you should seize more chances of participating social practice in media industry. Through practice, you could obtain on-site experience and clear, cross-functional understanding of the social media space.
