Ji Chen has recently finished his Master degree in Biology from Department of Biology, Graduate School of Arts and Science New York University. There he was first introduced to the field of computational biology. The second year he was Teaching Assistant of one of the mandatory graduate level courses in the Computational Biology Ph.D. program, and was highly spoken of. He just joined Computational and Systems Biomedicine Ph.D. program, as one of the three first year students, in Sackler Institute, New York University School of Medicine in September, 2016. Ji also received a Bachelor degree in Agronomy from Zhejiang University.

  有问必答

Q : What do you think is respectively the most important while applying for master and Ph.D. ?

A : Graduate schools are generally looking for candidates who are capable of successfully finishing a master program or a Ph.D. program. It includes motivation and knowing exactly what you have to do to achieve that, which should be presented and proved in one's personal statement and Resume. The difference between a master program and a Ph.D. program is that a master program is to prepare students for their career in corresponding field either academic or industrial whereas a Ph.D. program, with more emphasis on critical thinking, is for students with stronger academic background, though not necessarily up for an academic career.

Q : Is there any difference between working as a Research Assistant in Zhejiang University, Michigan State University and New York University?

A : Personally for me, being a research assistant in Zhejiang University and Michigan State University are both experiences that helped me understand what I really like to do in Biology and how to do research. I realized that rather than researching by conducting wet experiments, I prefer looking at questions at a broader perspective. With next generation sequencing applied commonly in the field, and large scale data available in various databases, one could see a problem differently from the way biologists used to. My research experience in New York University motivated me to extend my education in the computational biology field.

Q : How can you help our students who want to follow your path?

A : I have been through a stage figuring out what I don't like and what I want with my career, so I know what to offer when students seem confused or don't realize other possibilities. A graduate program is in some way a commitment to oneself and the best scenario is that students know what they want. Also, I understand what kind of candidates the graduate schools are looking for, how to engage with interviewers, and how to prepare accordingly.
