Yicheng Wen graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) with a BS degree in mechanical engineering in 2006. Back then, He was in the SJTU pilot class with collaboration with University of Michigan. He joined the Global Engineering Alliance for Research and Education (GEARE) program and went to Purdue as an exchange student in 2005. Starting from 2006, Yicheng became a PhD student in Pennsylvania State University (PSU). During this five year journey, he obtained two masters degree in both mechanical engineering and mathematics. Yicheng finished his thesis in information fusion in wireless sensor network and received his PhD in 2011. Yicheng joined GE Appliances as an algorithm engineer working on energy optimization on smart grid after graduation. In 2016, he left GE and became a senior data scientist in Allstate.

  有问必答

Q : What do you think is the most important in the application of a postgraduate program in Mechanical Engineering?

A : First, top US universities are most likely to admit students with good GPAs from top universities in China. In most admission committee of US universities, some Chinese professors if available would be in charge to review all applicants from Mainland China, so they know which school is good. Provided that you are from a good school, I think, a good reference letter is the most importance differentiator in the application. Reference letters from an ordinary professor you only took classes with in China adds very little to your application and it may actually hurts your application to some extent. In my case, I gathered all of my reference letters from professors in Purdue when I was an exchange student. Remember that academia is a small world. Their letters are much more valuable than ones from someone they do not know in China.

Q : Why did you choose to further your study abroad after finishing your undergraduate education in Shanghai Jiao Tong University?

A : In my last two years in Shanghai Jiaotong University, I had chance to do internship in General Motors in both Shanghai and US. The work there was neither interesting nor challenging to me. I knew I wanted to pursue more in academia. Combined my positive exchange experience in Purdue, I had determined to apply for PhD in top engineering universities in the United States.

Q : Could you introduce your work as a senior data scientist in Allstate?

A : Data science has become one of the hottest areas in most recent years. More and more companies have started trying to leverage the new big data technology to operate the business. Allstate is no exception. I joined Allstate Roadside Service (ARS) as a senior data scientist. I lead the data science work for the entire ARS business. My responsibility is to support and improve the business operation using advanced analytics, such as optimization algorithms and statistical learning methods. I conduct research and develop the future big data roadmap for ARS. Meanwhile, I am gradually building my data science team.
