Chuan Song has received his B.S. degree in Optical Information Science and Technology from Fudan University and is pursuing his Master degree of Electrical Engineering from University of Pennsylvania starting from Sep 2016. Chuan is currently studying in System Optimization and Engineering Economics, focusing on linear system and system optimization area. Chuan used to be a member of Fudan University Wangdao Scholarship Research Program, researching in early diagnosis of cervical cancer with Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy. Based on the research result Chuan published a SCI paper as co-first author.

Q : Why would you choose to further your study abroad after finishing your undergraduate education in Fudan University?

A : I took part in a summer exchange program to University of Queensland before making up my mind to further my study abroad. During the exchange period, I visited their labs and did some experiments in it under a post-doctor`s instruction. A completely different experience of study and research attracted me so much, which motivated me to go abroad after graduation from Fudan. Additionally, to broaden my horizon is another important reason to make this decision.

Q : What do you think are the differences between the teaching methods in Electrical Engineering of China and the USA?

A : I think that the biggest difference between the teaching methods is the requirement of self-study. In China our teacher almost explained all the things involved in our book, and teachers` slides used in class could be regarded as replacement of the book. However, in USA, most of the teachers only show key points in the fast paced class. The rest part should be learned by ourselves and usually the homework is not easy to finish without enough self-study. So it seems that only three to four courses are included in one semester but students are much busier in USA.

Q : How can you help our students apply for a postgraduate program in Electrical Engineering?

A : It is convenient for me to acquire the basic information of Electrical Engineering department belonging to different universities. So based on it I can provide suggestions for university and program selection and answer all the questions students may have in the process of application. What's more I can offer essential career information that Electrical Engineering students may care about. Meanwhile if there are any questions related to personal statement for application, I could give my advice on it.
