Yingjia (Jessica) is a currently a second year graduate student at Teachers College, Columbia University. Having been an exchange student in Moscow, Russia, after her graduation from major Russian Language and Literature at Sun Yat-sen University, she decided to continue to dig into the interdisciplinary filed of language, culture, literacy and education in the department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. During her graduate years in New York, she worked as an intern for Confucius Institute for Business at State University of New York and Institute for International Education.

Q : How did your experiences as an exchange student to Russia help in your application of Columbia University?

A : As a student majoring in liberal arts, I think the experiences of studying abroad is always helpful. First of all, it opened up my eyes as well as brought me out of my comfort zone. I obtained the experiences of living and studying abroad, which are also important for my life and study in the US. Second, what I did during my exchange study gave my opportunities to combine theories with cross-cultural practices. When I was an exchange student studying Education in Moscow, I decided to choose International and Comparative Education as my graduate major. I think my overseas experience and my multicultural background helped me a lot when I was applying to Teachers College, Columbia University.

Q : What do you learn from the internships in Confucius Institute for Business (SUNY) and Institute of International Education?

A : My internships at Confucius Institute for Business (SUNY) and Institute of International Education gave me opportunities to use the knowledge I learnt from my courses to solve problems in cross-cultural understanding and communications. They also brought me something new about language teaching, cultural understanding, international educational cooperation which I can reflect on my coursework. Besides, I also learnt how to work independently as well as collaboratively and communicate effectively with staff from all over the world with different cultural backgrounds.

Q : What do you think is the most important during the application of a postgraduate program in International Educational Development?

A : I think the volunteer experiences in developing countries or among underserved populations are of great importance during the application of a postgraduate program in, just to name a few, International Educational Development, public affairs, public management and social work. I know that many of us have experiences of being volunteers, teaching or serving people in rural areas or even in underdeveloped regions overseas in our undergraduate years. You should include those experiences in your personal statements and elaborate them as your shining points when applying for the aforementioned programs.
