After graduated from Renmin University of China in 2012, Wendy Su gave up the opportunity of attending Beijing University. Instead she applied for master programs in the United States, all by herself; and finally chose the marketing and communication program of New York University. New York is totally an international city, a big window of the world. Wendy kept working in diverse agencies and talking with diverse people there. Then she moved to the Silicone Valley of California, which is the place for most advanced technology and companies worldwide. She started a new job in a tech media company. And everyday job includes interviewing tech leaders, writing reports and broadcasting big name companies. Wendy believes in “Synergy Effect”, which means wherever you stay, you should apply your own capacity with the local culture and advantage for a better development, both in study and work.

Q : What factors should be considered while choosing an appropriate postgraduate program?

A : In my opinion, when choosing a postgraduate program, there are 3 important factors that should be considered seriously. 1. Self-interest—we really need to check thoroughly what the program is all about, and make sure we will enjoy the content. Foreign life can be somewhat boring and lonely (except in big cities like New York). Only if you enjoy the program, you can enjoy life there. 2. Location—if you try to work in the United States after graduation, the chance will be much bigger that you choose a program in large cities. All of my NYU schoolmates found more than one intern opportunities; while some friends studying in remote place had to go back to China (some of them came to New York to find a job, but it was still quite hard.) 3. Network in your study field—network means the structure of the program’s alumni. A large and active network means the program has strong power in this field, which is more important than the university’s rank. And by building your own network, you will get the newest industry information and more chances to interact with and work in big name companies.

Q : Briefly talk about the differences between working in China and the USA.

A : I’ve worked both in several Chinese companies and American companies. The most obvious difference is: as an entry-level employee, you get much higher salary in the USA (of course you also spend much more to study here)….And companies in the States are more tolerant and free—which means you work and live in a way you like and no one can judge, and you have enough holidays and money to enjoy life.

Q : Why do you want to be a mentor with CompassEdu?

A : I’ve worked as a teacher since middle school--I taught English and Chinese while our teachers took days off. I found communication and interaction are very, very useful in improving myself. I learned more by teaching than self-learning. And from another aspect, when I applied foreign programs all by myself, I made many mistakes—the timeline, the importance of recommendation letters, the balance of intern and application…I hope as a mentor in CompassEdu, I can help my students find the most effective way to join their dream schools, then the errors I ever made get some pay back.
