Thanks to her continuous hard work, never-give-up and down to earth attitude, to date, Ms. Fang Yi have accomplished all these challenges and reaped the harvest she has dreamed since 1999, the year she started her journey.   After graduated from Peking University with the Master’s degree in Economics, in 1999, as one of the four lucky foreign students among thousands of applicants worldwide, Ms. Fang Yi was admitted with full scholarship to pursue her PHD degree in Economics program of Emory University in Atlanta. With two-year advanced mathematics and economics study, Ms. Fang Yi gradually realized that she had more interest in utilizing her outstanding analytic skills and knowledge to solve realistic problems instead of focusing on abstract economic theories. As a result, she decided to transfer her focus on financial engineering and applied Quantitative and Computational Finance Master program at Georgia Institute of Technology. Ms. Fang Yi graduated in 2002 from this program with the Master degree of Science. Her study at Peking University, Emory and George Tech enabled her to adapt quickly in new and changing business, social and culture environments. Her strong academic performances with decent GPAs and very excellent analytical skills helped her land the first job as a data analyst. During the following 14 years, as a highly qualified data analytical professional, no matter which company she has served, from Broadview Networks, New York College of Health Professions to Nielsen Company, she effectively prioritized a broad range of responsibilities to consistently meet tight deadlines. No matter which tools and domain knowledge the jobs have required to learn, she has acquired new skills quickly and demonstrate flexibility, and resourcefulness when faced with new challenges. While appreciating her fruitful life here in America, she hope she can share her full experience of both accomplishments and failures with the ones who want to challenge themselves like her and eventually help them realize their dreams like her.

  有问必答

Q : Why did you choose to apply for a postgraduate program oversea after you had obtained a master degree in Peking University?

A : In April 2015, a Chinese middle school teacher wrote a letter of resignation, “The world is so big and I want to take a look”, which attracted so much attention and resonance in Chinese societies because so many people were sharing the same dream, including me at the year of 1999. But instead of just briefly taking a look, I desired to deeply understand how our American peers pursue their advanced academic knowledge, what are their study and research style and how they think of the world around us. In China, we had heard so much about America, but I wanted to distinguish the truth and false by studying and living there and through my own eyes. Meanwhile I wanted to challenge myself to see if I can study well or even better in a totally different social and cultural environment when I already adopted well in Chinese social and culture environment.

Q : How are the employment prospects of Quantitative and Computational Finance major both in China and in USA?

A : Quantitative and Computational Finance is an interdisciplinary program. It provides well rounded education in advanced mathematic modeling, statistical techniques, computer programming languages and solid financial theory. Mastering either or all of the knowledge and skills will be greatly helpful to land a decent job, which may not be limited to financial industry. But if only focusing on financial field, in my personal opinion, Chinese financial market will provide more opportunities and challenges than American. The current employment of American financial industry is still affected by 2008 financial crisis and quantitative financial products are highly regulated and closely monitored for trading. And in China, the emerging financial market, sufficient funding but limited investing channels and financial products, energetic but lack of experience investors, desperately need high qualified, knowledgeable young financial professionals with excellent professional ethics to improve the under-developed financial system. I would say, American universities provide more sophisticated education and training in this field, but Chinese financial market provides a wider arena to accomplish the career ambition.

Q : What advice do you have to someone who wants to follow your path?

A : What you have decided is not an easy way to advance. You need to have sufficient preparation, both physically and mentally, for the difficulties and frustrations you will encounter ahead. You will feel confusion and sometime desperate when you pursue your study abroad. But you are never alone. We all experience this stage of life. You should know yourself well, give yourself confidence and time to adopt new environment. Think positively but know where to find help if needed. Rely on your own strength and have a balanced life. Best luck to your study oversea.
